If you are looking for a way to save money on electricity, a variable speed pump can reduce your energy usage by up to 90%!
In this example, 2 variable speed pumps are running at the same time. Pump 1 is running on its lowest speed setting and using only 21 watts (less than a hallway nightlight!) while pump 2 is running at the only speed it operates, consuming 2425 watts. That’s a savings of over 2400 watts!

Most pools are built these days with the option for an automatic pool cleaner. One of the most common versions is a pressure pool cleaner. These cleaners are operated with water pressure, usually from an auxillary booster pump that works with the water being moved from the filter pump. This booster pump sends water thru a dedicated line to the pool, where the pool cleaner is attached to a special fitting by a hose. The water is then distributed within the cleaner for drive power and suction, in order to pull debris into a cleaner bag. These types of cleaners are great for pools with an abundance of nature that makes it into the pool.
Suction is generated by your pool pump, transforming the pool cleaner into an underwater vacuum. Each unit is specially designed to move around the pool in a specified pre-programmed pattern, cleaning the entire pool and depositing debris into the filter pump basket or leaf catcher. These cleaners are limited with the size of nature that they can pick up. If your pool is smaller and doesn’t have mature nature around it, then this type of cleaner is a great choice because it doesn’t require a separate pump.

A booster pump is an additional pump used to bolster pressure in the pool’s system. It’s commonly used to provide extra power to pressure cleaning tools.
A variable speed pool pump allows you more control over the filtering process. For example, if you’ve got guests coming over you may want to up the rpms on the filter in order to be ready on time. Also, the amount of time you adjust the rpms up can depend on how fast your pool gets dirty. While one household may need it upped for a couple hours a day, another may need 8-10 hours a day for optimally clean water. If properly managed, a variable speed pump can reduce the filter pump electrical cost by up to 90%.
