Winter Power Outage Pool Equipment Checklist

1. Pumps & Plumbing

  • Turn off power switches to pumps and pool equipment until power is safely restored.
  • Open all drain plugs on pumps, filters, heaters, and other equipment to allow water to drain out.
  • Remove pump lids to help water escape and reduce the risk of freezing.

2. Filters

  • Drain filter tanks by opening the drain plug at the bottom.
  • For DE and cartridge filters, remove the filter element if possible to prevent ice damage.

3. Heaters

  • Turn off the gas supply (if applicable).
  • Open the heater drain plugs to let water out of the heat exchanger.
  • Ensure the heater housing is clear of debris, rodents, or obstructions.

4. Pipes & Valves

  • Open all valves to allow any water in the plumbing to flow out.
  • If possible, blow out the lines with a shop vac or air compressor to prevent trapped water from freezing.

5. Freeze Guards & Automation

  • Once power is restored, verify freeze guards and timers reset correctly.
  • Manually check settings to ensure pumps/heaters restart as programmed.

6. Pool Surface & Water

  • Keep water level normal (do not drain the pool).
  • Break any surface ice with a pool pole to prevent expansion damage along the tile line.

7. Safety Precautions

  • Never pour hot water or use open flames to thaw frozen equipment.
  • Contact a professional immediately if you suspect damage to plumbing, pumps, or heaters.
